I've been seeing Spaghetti Squash for a while now in healthy recipe articles and some of the blogs I read (Jessica & Katy). I saw some in the grocery store, and it sounded easy enough, so I decided to try it out.
It IS easy. Microwave for a couple of minutes to soften the hull (husk? I'm not sure). Cut in half. Remove seeds. Put in baking dish. Bake. Remove meat (I think its called meat anyway. I don't feel like googling this right now, clearly). Mix with sauce. Eat.
OK, it does look like spaghetti, or at least angel hair. And the texture isn't that different from whole wheat pasta. And I hardly eat anything without cheese. But this needed a LOT of cheese. It just tasted...squashy. I know its super healthy and all...but eh. I'm not sold on spaghetti squash in lieu of pasta.
What type of sauce did you use? It works well with a heavy sauce and make sure that you have a ripe squash and sometimes spritz with water helps... I've made it a few times and it's either awesome or not so hot...
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to try different kinds of squash but am hesitant because I have not enjoyed to kinds I have tried unless they have lots of butter and non good for me stuff. Glad to know I'm not alone!
ReplyDeletei don't use it in place of pasta. i use it as a side dish. after i bake it, i throw it in a pan and saute it with a little oil and garlic. it's tasty that way! and i don't bother microwaving it, either. i just hack through it!
ReplyDeleteIt was normal sauce...good sauce...I think it'd be kind of weird with alfredo or vodka sauce.
ReplyDeleteI do think it'd like it better as a side...and garlic makes anything better! A bowl was just too much!
Mix a good sauce with chunky veggies and do it on a side and you'll like it... make sure it's soft though..
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you tried it...so I don't have to!
