do-over

Its been two years since I had my melanoma removed. I kind of regret not taking a photo of the mole (though who does that?) or a photo of the scar when it was fresh. Its kind of skin colored now and no longer raised, albeit still long and pretty huge.

Since then, I've had 2 more suspicious moles removed (neither of the sharpie-marker variety, and both the derm took off only because of my history and their slight odd-ness).  I had a mole removed at my last appointment
because it had changed color. I mentioned it to the doctor when she started scanning me. She looked at it, kind of shrugged, finished my front, then returned to it. With a microscope. And off it came. It was oval and had darkened a little on one side. She assured me all would be fine and said to come back in 6 months.

I'm going back in 2 weeks.  The nurse called a couple of days ago and the sample was abnormal - not cancer, but inflamed [something I didn't catch] (yes I could have asked to speak to her later, but really, when a medical office calls with test results, 99.5% of the time it is not good news - e.g. no news is good news - and who wants to be in suspense like that?).  So, I get to get more skin taken out from around my pre-cancerous mole.

The nurse told me several times its not urgent - and if I was going away for Memorial Day to make the appointment for June so I don't have to worry about the stitches. Awesome.  Let's assume its not going to be a giant hole and 4 inches of stitches. I'll believe that until told otherwise.

I did be sure to schedule my appointment after my last rugby game ever though...

  1. I know how you feel. My derm told me at my last yearly check I'd probably have several abnormal moles every year, and to get used to this. Its better than cancer, but still an inconvenience.

  2. I have a mole that's needed to get checked for a long time but I keep putting it off. I'm fair skinned and burn really easily so I know how important it is to get checked, I'm just scared and my insurance sucks.

  3. One of my friend's mom does her yearly skin check in the fall. She figures if she needs to have anything lopped off, it will have time to heal before the next summer rolls around. I should really start getting a yearly skin check too.
