Ate: 42 points
Used: 12 earned activity points (6 running; 6 elliptical) and 3 weekly points.
Today's big takeaway: maybe eating two big cookies for breakfast at home (then having real breakfast at work) isn't a great idea.
On the upside, I ran for the first time in almost a week...30 minutes, 3 miles and change (3.27?). I decided to add "Run 1000 miles" to my goals for the year. That's about 2.7/day and almost 20/week, which is ambitious for me at this point and I think a good motivator. I hit 700 in 2007 running Jan-March (half training) and July - Nov (full training)...

Turket Trot
My dad and I (and my mom and a friend of mine) did our annual Thanksgiving 5k this past weekend. We started running it in 2009 (I even managed to blog about it in 2010). I ran it in 29:02 (on my watch, the chip times were all screwed up. I didn't run a 23:xx nor did my mom do a 40:xx (she did come in under 50 minutes though which is a huge PR for her, not that she keeps track...).
It's a great race, sizeable (at around 2k runners) for a local run, if crowded at the start. I can't blame the runners for me time (ok, maybe for 30 seconds of it). I can only blame myself, my walking on the hills and my lack of general training.
In other news I started weight watchers today.

D-day
well, whatever.
My last couple of posts have been kind of pathetic, and centered on the exact same thing. And I'd like to note, 2 months apart.
If you flip back, which I don't feel like doing at the moment, you'll see the same old crap in 2009.
Its an endless cycle.
One of my biggest issues is "I already had 4 mini twix, might as well stop counting calories today". That's where I am today. It's 2:24 pm and I've had 1500 calories. Since I track my calories, I can say this is actually pretty normal for me. And I am embarrassed to admit about 20% on a good day of my diet is junk.
A friend forwarded me a new article by Jennifer Weiner yesterday which is so poignant. Maybe I need to either a) accept my size and like of food, including my poor use of it or b) change.
To be honest, I'm not sure what the right thing to do is. I don't want to be a bad role model - but is being a kind of chubby but otherwise healthy mom ok? I know talking about my weight to around the girls over and over isn't ok. I don't want them to have issues. Or be fat. Or think about their weight. Over and over and over.
In the old days, sometime in college when I got fat then thin-ish (actually I was kind of fit/hot, if not thin), I did Thursday weigh-ins. So here goes. Tomorrow. We'll call it. As much as I'd like to be all aggressive and lose-2-lbs-a-week-superwoman-never-get-fat-again, I don't think that's realistic, so I'm going to go for a net of 1500 cal/day, which should yield about a lb a week loss.
Tomorrow is go.

so...
We're still doing the NY Marathon, though in all honesty just running to finish. no time goal. We're both mildly injured (well, C is more than mildly injured and is in PT) and I'm overweight. Finishing at all with 2 one year olds is good right?
It kind of pains me to "waste" an entry to NYC on racing to finish, but I'm kind of over it. It's a fun, huge, crowded race, and we're running it together. It'll be a lot more fun than running with time pressure. I can save that for a less cool race someday (though I doubt I'll do another marathon anytime soon).
In the meanwhile, I'm setting my sights on a 5k PR for this Thanksgiving (starting training this week) and losing some weight. I was 175.6 this morning, the most I've been in a while. Granted, I am probably bloated etc yuck etc, but ugh. I need to stop fucking around. Its been nearly 4 years at this weight and I just keep bitching like that'll change something.
So small goals, 10 lbs by Thanksgiving (8 weeks).

so what now?
The marathon is in 12 weeks.
We're still following this low mileage training plan. I have a 17 miler to do this weekend. (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I ran exactly 3 miles last week. whoops. It IS a low mileage plan though with a good internetz reputation for running-to-finish).
My whole body creeks.
I am so tired.
I'm not sure if these things are related.
Am I tired from having twins who don't sleep through the night? Am I tired because I drink too much caffeine and eat too much sugar? (both of those answers are probably yes) Am I tired because my potassium is low? (more on that next week sometime) Am I tired because I'm fat, and I drink too much caffeine and eat too much sugar, and I don't sleep enough so I drink more caffeine and eat too much sugar, and circle back around? Well, that's likely.
I realized recently I am pretty afraid of failure. And if you never try you can't fail.
And I have some pretty ridiculous and negative self talk, which mimics my mom in a scary way. And her eating habits, which I criticize a lot. I mimic those too. I never realized how similar my bad habits and issues are to hers until I lived with her for a few months recently. Scary. I don't want that for our girls.
It is time to make a change. Time for me to lose 30 lbs. Time for me to stop drinking an embarrassing amount of soda daily, and stop eating candy pretty much daily.
I'm nervous though. Of not meeting calorie goals, of not losing weight, of gaining it all right back.It sounds like it would be easier not to change than to change and then revert. Then the failure and issues are public, and failure is embarrassing.

more interactive BBC stuff
The BBC rocks.
After finding my Olympic Body Double, I poked around their page a little more.
Seems at my current weight, with a BMI (sigh) of 28, I have a lower BMI than 59% (!!) of 30-44 year olds in the US. I am fairly chubby, though not obese even by BMI standards, but I admit I am shocked by this.
Of course, my BMI is HIGHER than 77% of women in the same age bracket internationally, so I think it is safe to say Americans are just fat.
If I were at my goal (hah), I'd have a lower BMI - at 23 - than 83% of my American peers and 54% internationally. So I guess my goal is pretty average for international weight for my height...
Also, I'm roughly 4,533,454,396th person born/currently living on Earth and 79,171,698,182nd person to have lived since history began.
Random scary BBC factiods:
Battle for resources: It is estimated that your group of the richest countries consumes double the resources used by the rest of the world. The UN estimates that if current population and consumption trends continue, by the 2030s we will need the equivalent of two Earths to support us.
Did you know? By mid-century, the world's urban population is likely to be the same size as the global population was in 2004.
Yikes.

olympic body double
I saw this on Ben Does Life...
The BBC has a fun little Olympic Body Double site.
My body double is a weightlifter named Jack Oliver from Great Britain. Not only is he a guy (duh) but he's also 10 years younger than me.
He placed 10th in his event, so no medal for "me".
He did PR though, apparently, with a snatch of 308lbs and a clean and jerk of 374lbs, omg.
For kicks, I checked my goal weight (well, the theoretical one if, you know, I was trying to lose weight), and then my double would be British soccer player Elizabeth Brown. I'm more on board with being an awesome footballer :)

so that fall marathon
So this November, my wife and I are running the NYC Marathon. This is a bucket list item for her, and I wanted to do it again, so we're going to run together.
Truth be told, we're running to finish, not to "race" it. This is good for a couple of reasons:
On a related note, the race is 14 weeks from this coming Sunday. I currently weigh 16 lbs more than I did when I ran it in 2007. Should I try to lose the weight? I don't know. The biggest most ridiculous hurdle to that for me right now is I don't want to have to admit to anyone I didn't/couldn't find the motivation/whatever if I do try...ridiculous.

- it is her first full (and likely my last, at least as far ahead as I can think), and anyone with marathon experience knows running to finish is a good game plan for 26.2 miles.
- we have infant (almost toddler, omg) twins

Tired
I think part of my weight gain this year has to do with lack of sleep. I know I'm not working out like I should be/used to, but really, I don't sleep much either. Not enough anyway. It is better than it was, but I am still tired and looking for snacks a lot of days.
I need to break the sugar to stay awake cycle. Getting much more sleep isn't really in the cards at the moment, unless I start going to bed at 8 pm. I already drink a lot of caffeine via bad-for-me diet soda. Should I switch to coffee? Is that even an improvement? Thoughts?

224
As of May 7, I have run 224 miles this year. I've had this goal in the back of my mind since late 2007 to run 1000 miles in a year. I think I hit 700 that year, a year when I was "single," young (lol), pretty fit, and running a lot. And 20 lbs lighter than now.
To hit 1000, I'd need to run 3.26 miles/day for the remainder of the year. Just about 100 miles/month, or 25/week. I'd really need to pick it up. Should I try? I'm not sure.
I feel like a bit of a health and fitness failure these days. I've put on 20 lbs in 4.5 years, 10 of that in the last 9 months or so.

6 mo well visit/peanuts
Our 6 month well visit was sort of a failure, given how the babies have been sick for a week now. Quinn got an official croup diagnosis (and it's likely Avery had it, we just didn't know since she had lost her voice. Most pathetic thing ever, a 6 mo old who can't make noise crying). So we got weighed and measured and generally checked out, chatted about sleep and solids (more on this later), and sent on our merry way with a script for new vitamins and steriods for the croup.
Our last well visit was at 4 months, and they're more or less managed to grow on their curve. Both dropped a smidge in weight percentiles, but in all honesty, I think it is from The Sickness, as they'd both been eating around 60-70% of their norm for a few days.
percentiles from this site for actual age. It uses the CDC and not WHO charts, but whatever, good for scanning curves at least. It also reports anything at 5% or under as 5, which is ridiculous...Quinn is more like 3rd, if that, in weight when you look at the chart.
Quinn

fall races. and 8 weeks to go.
So for this fall I'm planning to run the NYC Marathon. Sorta. The babies are coming in mid-August, so I'm trying to be open minded about deferring. BUT I am DEFINATELY doing the St Louis Half in October, so....I need to start training. It even fits perfectly with one of the two training plans I'm considering for NYC (last summer's Runner's World's 4 hr plan. because, you know, with a 16:55 2 mile time I'm TOTALLY in shape to run a 4 hr marathon. LOLsies).
Problem?
I'm only doing 10-15 miles a week, capping around 5-6 miles at a pop.
Ugh.
Time to get moving on up. I basically have until the week of July 17 to get fit and get my long run up to 10 miles and my weekly base to 25 miles.
July 17 is in a month. That's 5 running weeks, counting this week. I've run 4 miles this week. And stopped a million times.
Is this a bad idea?
I'm not sure.
But here it goes.
Plan for the rest of the week is 3 3-4 milers and a 7 miler this weekend. That'll put me to at least 20.
and, for the record, if you've been following my weight loss commentary...
I haven't lost an ounce. Still going back to WW though. Again. (OK, technically I weight 2 lbs less than what I did 11 months ago, but we all know 2 lbs is a salty meal).
Seriously though, I need to lose this 15-25 lbs before I give the unborn babies complexes at age 2.

most boring post ever
I ran 4, 4, 4 and 6 last week. TECHNICALLY above the 4,4,4,4 of my planned stepback, but quite below the 4,4,4,10 I wanted to do to make up for the 9 I missed a couple of weeks back. Fail. I have three long runs left (11,12,10) I MUST hit to be ready for this half in a month...not even a month. March 3.
andddd I was 173 this morning. Apparently Roy Rogers on the Turnpike + sausage my mom cooked + not really counting last week + random bedtime almonds means I am up 3+ lbs this week. Sigh. I need to be better about the details.
looking ahead: 3, 6 with 3x1m, 2, 11 this week. And I WILL do it.

running update
No pun intended.
I scrapped the 9 miler. It is lost.
I did get in all my mileage last week though. Schedule: 2, 5, 2, 10. Did 5, 3.5, 2, 10. YES! No failure.
I'm even down another half pound. 169. teehee. Whatever, I'll pretend it is a real loss and not dehydration (WW and me weren't friends last week).
I am glad I have another 4 long runs before the race. I stopped A LOT on that 10 miler, and my pace was about a 9:50 without stops. A long way to go to my 2 hr (9:06ish pace) half marathon goal! I hit a 2:03 on a downhill course last year at this weight, and supposedly 5 lbs is enough to take off 2 minutes. Can I lose 10 lbs this month and make my goal on a sort of hilly course since I'll be better trained this time? That's a lot of ifs/maybes. But I AM GOING TO TRY DAMMIT.

the impending half marathon
Last week was a good running week. I did my 2, 4, 2 and 8. My 8 was terrific too.
I even lost a pound. 171, hi.
This week, eh. I had 2, 5, 2 and 9 on the schedule. I did 3.5, 2.5, 3.3 and 4. Crap. I even technically had time and decent weather to do that 9 today and just didn't. Just wasn't feeling it. Dammit, especially with last week's good 8 and this week's AMAZING 3.3 in 65 degree weather on the West Side Highway.
So I started at my schedule - several times actually - and figured out the best plan to make up this week... This coming week will be 9 (tomorrow since I am off), 2, 5 and 10. Lots of math and cross and uncrossing things off in various iterations of the next two weeks of schedule led me to believe this is the best solution for my mileag and least likely to make me risk injury. And I'll be back on track at that point.
Other goal this week, besides not falling off the half marathon wagon (which I will NOT do seeing as I have two race registrations this spring!): lift twice, for 25 min each.
Little goals, little goals!
I also need to weigh myself Tuesday when I get to NJ. I know I am over again this week (I really, really need to save my weekly or activity points for the weekend) but I am hoping for at least a tiny dip, despite my bloaty visitor. A girl can dream anyway.

eh.
This week was not a repeat of the training success of last week. Basically I was lazy. And whiny about the snow. In the end, I did 2.6 miles (2x1), 1 mile (with Bailey), and 8.09 miles (long run, 3 stop and go with Bailey and 5 on my own). The long run was actually decent and an ok pace (9:36, counting the 30 second walk breaks every 5 minutes or so, but not counting Baileys stops to sniff things or my stops to cross streets, etc. I stopped probably 10 times on my own briefly, and who knows how many with the pup).
So back on the wagon for next week. I have 2 two milers, 4 miles speedwork, and a 8 miler to do. Needless to say, I've backed off a bit from my aggressive mileage goals, but am still hoping to hit 2 hrs at the MORE half. No more slacking on training for me.
Its also time to get on board with getting my body in better shape. While I don't have the worst diet, I am an emotional eater. And a boredom eater. And not a salad eater. I am still exactly the same 172 lbs I was in July (when I supposedly was getting my act together..6 months ago). Bah. I had dropped 5 lbs or so during rugby season, thanks to all the built in interval work, but that ended 3 months ago and hopped right back on. So, after much hemming and hawing, I reactivated (again) my WW Online account. The Points system has changed somewhat (marketing ploy really, but its good they account for protein now). I spent the last few days tracking without thinking about what I'm eating (which is too much and lacking fresh things...mostly the latter though). Today, I am starting to track with purpose.
Good thing I just earned a ton (16?) points running!
And not a salad eater. last week's training
Boring, boring I am sure.
Monday: weights. same as last Monday.
Tuesday: practice, and I ran 2.4ish miles over lunch.
Wednesday: weights, same as last Wednesday. I did upgrade to 10 lb dumbbells for the shoulder move though! I also keep running into this guy from work - this guy who is second in command at my school - and its a little awkward. At least we both always have on the same clothes and are equally dirty!!!
Thursday: practice. I think I also ran 2.5 this morning.
Friday: 2.4 or so miles.
Saturday: 2.2 miles via HIIT intervals.
Sunday: 4.4 miles with 200x10 with 2 min walking rest. I was below a 7:30 min/mile pace for all the intervals, peaking at a 6:15 pace for 2 (about 48 seconds). You can kind of see in my splits where I went uphill and where I went downhill. It is a little sad though. I was working pretty hard and can't hold a "fast" pace for long. I think the dream of a 21 min 5k is far, far away (of course, I still need to achieve a 24 min 5k!).
14.1 miles for the week, plus 2 crosstraining (practice) and 2 weight sessions of 30 min. OK. I still need to get back to 15 miles/week for the "non-training". My goal is to do the 15 miles in any form as long as it includes one 5+ easy run.
Food wise I did ok. I did have two giant (expensive) salads for lunch, but I also had too much in the way of (unhealthy) snackies. I tend to munch when bored/frustrated/etc at work (definitely the culprit last week). I need to bring more fruit and such to combat these moments. More water won't cut it...I already drink about a 3/4 to 1 gallon of liquids a day (depending on workouts).
Weight: 169.8 Monday am. Good, back to 2 weeks ago and 2.2 lbs below my "restart" 3 weeks ago. I'll take it. 15 more to out of overweight :)

last week's workouts
Not as good as the week before, plus I wasn't as on the wagon with eating. After finally dropping below 172 last week (to 169.8!) I was 171.4 this morning. So, still down 0.6 in two weeks but the week of not really watching what I ate showed. Whoops. It's largely a result of a few sizable poor choices. I really need to get a handle on my emotional and stress eating. Being tense does not mean I need half a bag (a big bag) or pretzel or 6 huge cookies! So this is a new week. My short term goal is to lose 15 lbs or so (ideally 17 to put me out of "overweight") by Thanksgiving in 3 months.
Anyway, its a new week now, so a look back:
Monday: nothing I recall
Tuesday: practice. We did a fun ten minute fitness drill I think I performed well in too.
Wednesday: lifted for about 30 minutes. Front squat with push press, 1 point DB rows, 1 leg squats on the v-squat machine (mostly because I'm working on my range of motion).... I can't recall what else but there was 2 other exercises.
Thursday: 20 minute treadmill run at lunchtime (2.29 miles), practice. We did sprints by position and I didn't know who to go with - I'm prop sized but play mostly second row and this is a new coach and I basically panicked. So I ran a lot of 20 and 40 m out and back sprints (so 40 and 80 I guess). I wanted to die. The last set I looked like a big loser, but I guess I did almost double everyone else so that that make my lack of speed less terrible? I don't know.
Friday: lifted about 30 minutes. Wide grip deadlift, underhand lat pulldowns, shoulder raises, lunge with elevated front foot and pushups. All 3x8. 30 minute treadmill run in afternoon, 3.45 miles.
Saturday: nothing. I planned to run but my hamstrings felt awful. Like I could barely keep up with my wife walking around the grocery store awful. I'm not sure if this is from the sprints or the treadmill (both of which runs were much faster than I've been doing outside lately).
Sunday: unlike last week's semi-accidental 7.75 miler, I squeaked out 3 or so miles. My watch died around mile 1 so I'm not totally sure. My hamstrings were still displeased and I decided it would be more responsible to only do 8.5 miles for the week and not pull anything. This was probably a good choice, since I feel good today.

so I'm in a better mode today
For now, let's call yesterday's mini-meltdown a PMS symptom or similar. I'm not 100% sure I'm going to do it, but I'm feeling better today. What I do know is I need a less intense training plan. Maybe I can handle the 25+ miles/week when I have nothing else going on...maybe next year? I don't know. But right now, looking at a week of 5,6,4,9 is overwhelming.
So, I'm somewhat modifying Hal Higdon's novice & intermediate programs. They're really 12 week programs, but I have a 15-20 mpw base (except for last week's 9.5), so I think it'll be fine. Here goes. If I find this overwhelming, I'll drop the shorter easy run. I'm going to reevaluate in 3 weeks, and if its going week (one month pre-race) I'm going to register for the race. (I am just hedging my bets there will be room).
Week of 8/2
4 easy, 3 easy, 7x400, 3 pace, 8 long
Week of 8/9 (rugby practice x 2 starts this week)
4.5 easy, 8x400, 3 easy, 5 pace, 9 long
Week of 8/16
4.5 easy, 4x800, 3 easy, 5 pace, 10 long
Week of 8/23 (game on Saturday...if I play less than 40 min I'll add 4 easy)
5 easy, 9x400, 5 pace, 11 long
Week of 8/30 (game on Saturday...if I play less than 40 min, I'll add 4 easy)
5 easy, 5x800, 5 pace, 12 long
Week of 9/6 (tournament weekend...to exhausting to even think about)
5 easy, 10x400, 5 pace, 10 long
Week of 9/13
4 easy, 3 pace, 2 easy, RACE
I am just letting myself do the runs and not worry too much about time. Maybe I'll hit 2 hrs. Maybe not. But Maybe I'll even lose a couple of pounds. Its been a month and I haven't lost an ounce. Whoops. DO OVER!
