in the home stretch
The 3 Day Walk for Breast Cancer is next weekend! I'm working with my team to plan our packing list and travel. Lots to figure out - clothes for 3 days + nights in the tent, blister prevention, evening activities, what to do about school work when I can't use my computer for a whole weekend (ok, this isn't a huge issue - I rarely do school work on the weekend)...

one month to go
Our big 3 day walk is in a month! I unfortunately haven't been training as much as I should due to a foot fracture, cold, and the onset of classes and rugby, but I am still 100% sure it will be an awesome experience! It will be an honor to participate in this event in honor of my mom (in remission for 7 (I think) years), my friend MR's mom (fighting again), and all of the other women out there with the disease.

the big C
One of my oldest friend's mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer today. She was treated a few years ago for breast cancer, but now it has spread to her liver. Scary. Very scary.
My mom had late stage II breast cancer in October 2001. Almost 8 years now. She had a single mastectomy, then there was a few months of chemo, then a summer of radiation. I was away for all of it, at college, except the first chemo. I was home for Christmas, and the grilled cheese I made in the microwave made her sick from the smell. A big selfish part of me is kind of glad I was gone so I didn't have to cope with the realities every day, and also so I didn't have to explain my lack of emotion. I don't do emotional well. I "prefer" to bottle up my "upset-ness" and instead lash out at inconsequential things, like trash cans left on the curb, undone laundry, or late trains.
MR's Mom is joining my mom (both in spirit, my mom isn't walking 60 miles) as my Women of Honor for the 3-day Walk this fall. Which reminds me, I need to get on fundraising...I'm at 25% of my $2300 goal. There's a donate button to the right... :)

21%
I've raise 21% of my minimum ($2300) for the breast cancer 3 day this October (see side bar). I've kind of spammed my friends (who are mostly poor and/or house buying and/or wedding planning), but not the family so much, so I'm hoping to get more donations when I do a mailing next month. I'm super excited that friends have been donating though, and am especially grateful to the couple of people I've never even met who've contributed!! (love!) I'd *really* prefer to avoid a having to solicit local businesses to put a change can or similar out! I am thinking about having a BBQ this summer and inviting my neighbors (well, the 2 or 3 I know, and putting invite cards (hi vista.print?) in others' mailboxes and putting a donation box out there. We'd supply burgers etc..would that be weird? Or profitable? I'm not sure.

GoodSearch
Mike posted about GoodSearch as a fund-raising search engine. I love a little philanthropy (see 3-day link in sidebar!! Walking 60 miles for breast cancer research and awareness (shameless plug to encourage donations!)) . I found my HS marching band as one of the groups you can donate to! As important as cancer research? Probably not. Benefiting the lives and development of hundreds of kids? Yes. CHS Mustang Band, you get my couple of cents per search!
I have no idea how this compares to Google, but so far so good and Mike has Zappo-ed on it, so I figure I can run everything through GoodSearch and if that's not productive, try my buddy Goog (I need to branch out anyway...between gmail, blogger, gchat, googledocs, googlereader, googlefinance...Google owns my life)
